Many movies would have been different with a different cast. Actors have passed on iconic roles for reasons like scheduling conflicts or lack of interest. In hindsight, some of them probably regret their choices.
But, right or wrong, it’s funny to imagine some famous flicks with a different star in them.
Now it’s time for Bright Side to bring you 9 celebrities that passed on some memorable performances.
1. Sean Connery as Gandalf and Morpheus
Sean Connery has turned down 2 of the most iconic roles in the history of cinema: Morpheus in The Matrix and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings.
Mr. Connery rejected both roles because he did not understand the scripts.
2. Emma Watson as Belle
Young actress Emma Watson turned down a role in La La Land due to scheduling conflicts with Beauty and the Beast (2017). Thank God we could see Emma Stone again with Ryan Gosling.
3. Nicolas Cage as “The Ram” Robinson
Nic Cage rejected the main role in The Wrestler because he didn’t agree with taking steroids, a vital part of Mickey Rourke’s performance. Rourke walked home with a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. And it was well-deserved!
4. Gwyneth Paltrow as Rose Dewitt Bukater
Jack and Rose will always be remembered in the massive blockbuster Titanic.
But the memorable couple played by Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet, could have been Leonardo Di Caprio and Gwyneth Paltrow if she hadn’t rejected the part due to lack of interest. And we are happy about that.
5. Kate Winslet as Viola De Lesseps
In a plot twist, it was actually Kate Winslet who subsequently turned down a role in Shakespeare in Love (1998) to focus on independent films. But she did take part in Shakespeare’s play (oh the irony) Hamlet.
6. Julia Roberts as Leigh Anne Tuohy
Sandra Bullock was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress in The Blind Side, a role previously offered to superstar Julia Roberts. She passed on the role and missed the chance to be the best paid actress of the year!
7. Sandra Bullock as Maggie Fitzgerald
Alright, Sandra got her recognition later on, but before The Blind Side she could have taken the main role in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby. Again, an Oscar Winning performance. The reason? Scheduling conflicts with Miss Congeniality 2.
8. Michelle Pfeiffer as Clarice Sterling
Next to Anthony Hopkins as the cannibal Hannibal Lecter, Jodie Foster shone bright as Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, a role rejected by Michelle Pfeiffer. Hard to imagine, right?
9. John Travolta as Forrest Gump
We will always wonder what would have happened if John Travolta would have taken the role of Forrest Gump. Travolta chose instead to star as gangster Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. I guess we can’t really blame him!
